Update: BBM For Android in Beta Testing Phase Leaked Images Showing the User Interface For BBM on Android

BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) will be available for download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store come this summer. At BlackBerry Live event today the CEO of the company, Thorsten Heins announced that the BBM will be available for Android as well as iOS users. BBM will no longer be exclusive to BlackBerry.

Heins went on to say that it is sign of confidence and this move will provide Blackberry to showcase its product to millions of other users as well. Currently Apple has its own messaging service iMessage while there are many cross platform messaging services on Android and iOS. WhatsApp is one of the most popular service currently which is available on BlackBerry, Android and iOS.

BBM will be supported by Android on 4.0 (ICS) and above and iOS 6 and above. During the initial phase of its launch only messaging and group function will be available and later other features like BBM Voice, screen sharing and BBM Channels will be added. It will be free to use application with no charges whatsoever.

BBM loosing its exclusivity, opens a new topic for debate. I personally feel that this move could backfire, at least in the initial phases. This could have been a great move if this was done couple of years back, just when apps like WhatsApp and WeChat started to become popular. As far as I know, and I am no pundit speaking just from my and my friends experiences, the last thing that was keeping BlackBerry loyalists attached to the company was BBM. The moment it will become available to other platforms, they will move to better and more popular operating system.

BBM On Android & iOS Coming This Summer!

BlackBerry CEO, Heins might be right, saying this move is a sign of confidence, but blackberry might have to think out of the box to retain their customers once the exclusivity of BBM is lost. The recent success of BlackBerry 10 OS, there flagship device Blackberry Z10 and recently announced Qwerty keyboard BlackBerry Q10 might give the company a much needed boost to stay alive and fight with giants like Android and iOS
